Amazon Studios has made three big announcements so far this week, including The Tender Bar release date, a new Eddie Murphy deal, and the start of production on The People We Hate at the Wedding.
Directed by Academy Award winner George Clooney from a script by Academy Award winner William Monahan, The Tender Bar is based on Pulitzer Prize-winning author J.R. Moehringer’s memoir of the same name.
Starring Academy Award winner Ben Affleck, Tye Sheridan, Christopher Lloyd and Lily Rabe, The Tender Bar will be released in Los Angeles and New York on December 17 and nationwide on December 22.
It will then launch globally on Amazon Prime Video on January 7, 2022.
The Tender Bar tells the story of J.R. (Sheridan), a fatherless boy growing up in the glow of a bar where the bartender, his Uncle Charlie (Affleck), is the sharpest and most colorful of an assortment of quirky and demonstrative father figures.
As the boy’s determined mother (Rabe) struggles to provide her son with opportunities denied to her — and leave the dilapidated home of her outrageous if begrudgingly supportive father (Christopher Lloyd) — J.R. begins to gamely, if not always gracefully, pursue his romantic and professional dreams – with one foot persistently placed in Uncle Charlie’s bar.
Amazon Studios has also closed a three-picture and first-look film deal with Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Eddie Murphy. Under the pact, Murphy will star in three films for Amazon Studios and develop original film projects for Prime Video and Studios with the potential to star.
The deal formalizes Murphy’s relationship with Amazon Studios on the heels of the success of Coming 2 America. Following its March 5 release on Prime Video, the comedy was the #1 streamed movie of the weekend, with the #1 opening weekend of any other streaming movie in 2021 to date, and #1 opening weekend of any streaming movie in the past 12 months. The film also topped Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings among all streamed SVOD content.
“Eddie is a legend both in front of and behind the camera,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios. “With undeniable comedic and dramatic genius, he consistently delivers entertaining, original stories and characters to audiences around the world. We could not be more excited to help carry on the tradition and to officially welcome Eddie into the Amazon family.”
Up next, Murphy will produce and star in Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop 4 and star opposite Jonah Hill in a Kenya Barris-directed comedy for Netflix.
And last but not least, Amazon Studios announced that production has started in London on the upcoming film The People We Hate at the Wedding. Cynthia Addai-Robinson (The Lord of the Rings, The Accountant, Power), Karan Soni (Miracle Workers, Not Okay, 7 Days), Dustin Milligan (Rutherford Falls, Schitt’s Creek), Tony Goldwyn (King Richard, The Hot Zone: Anthrax), Isaach De Bankolé (The Limits of Control, Black Panther, Casino Royale), Jorma Taccone (Popstar, Kung Fury 2), and Julian Ovenden (Bridgerton, Adult Material, Knightfall) will join a cast led by Allison Janney, Kristen Bell, and Ben Platt.
Claire Scanlon is directing the FilmNation Entertainment-produced romantic comedy from a script by Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin and Wendy Molyneux, which the duo adapted from Grant Ginder’s novel of the same name. Margot Hand and FilmNation Entertainment’s Ashley Fox will produce the film, which will debut exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide next year.
The People We Hate at the Wedding follows struggling American siblings Alice (Bell) and Paul (Platt), who reluctantly agree to attend the wedding of their estranged, wealthy half-sister in the English countryside alongside their mother, Donna (Janney). Over the course of the wedding week, the family’s many skeletons are wrenched from the closet, and the unlikely reunion gives everyone the motivation to move their own lives forward.
A modern wedding comedy for anyone with a slightly dysfunctional family (everyone), or anyone who’s been forced to attend a wedding they tried to avoid (also everyone).
